Saying Merry Christmas in Different Languages
How do you say ‘Merry Christmas’ in French, German, and Spanish? Saying Merry Christmas in other languages may be a sign of respect, a willingness to go the extra mile with a translation to make an impression, or just a fun activity, like playing a game: “How do you say Merry Christmas in every language anybody might imagine?”
Due to real-world restrictions such as special characters, different alphabets, and words that don’t exist in certain languages, we decided to present each translation in the English alphabet, without accents, diacritics, overdots, and similar additions, always using only Latin characters.
Instead of transcriptions and pronunciations, we’ll add videos with a selection of greetings by native speakers wishing Merry Christmas in their own languages.
This is the best we can do at the moment, which doesn’t mean we won’t be able to add more languages or expand the existing ones with more useful info in the future. We have already made a lovely poster which is free for personal use, so don’t hesitate to download it and share it with your friends. Stay tuned!

Did you know that the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’ originated in the first half of the 16th century, at a time when the word ‘merry’ referred to much wilder celebrations than we are used to today? In the 17th century, Puritan authorities restricted celebrations (including the greetings!) due to excessive drinking and other improper behaviour on Christmas. However, it remained popular among the people until it virtually exploded with the publication of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in 1843.
